Local Law Enforcement Enhancement Act of 2001
- 2001/1/1
Hate crimes are crimes motivated by a person's prejudice based on the race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, or disability of the victim. The actual crime may be a physical assault, destroying property or other illegal act, but for it to be called a hate crime, the reason behind the act must be prejudice. This law allows the United States Attorney General, the country's top law enforcement official, to offer special assistance to state and local governments when investigating and prosecuting these crimes. The law directs the Attorney General to give out grants to programs that work to stop hate crimes, especially hate crimes committed by juveniles. It also calls upon the Attorney General to collect statistics about these crimes to help officials better understand these crimes and try to stop them them from happening in the future.
